A Gift From the Heart

Gladys and Frederick Stewart

Gladys and Frederick Stewart

Gladys Stewart came to this country from Cuba as a young woman in 1948 to join members of her family and to seek a bright future. At the age of 75, Mrs. Stewart married and she and her husband shared a happy life together. After her husband, Frederick, passed away Mrs. Stewart mentioned to her cousin, Mrs. Josephine Clary, that since she did not have children of her own, she might want to help children and particularly less-fortunate ones. She and Mrs. Clary came for a tour of the hospital and went away moved by what was being done for children in need of medical care. During her lifetime, Mrs. Stewart made two modest gifts, one for $50.00 and the other for $25.00. However, she lived her life by her principles and listened to her heart as well. Upon her death, her cousin, Mrs. Clary, reached out to the Foundation and informed us that Mrs. Stewart had left the hospital $1,250,000 under her will to be used to help needy children who come to Nicklaus Children's Hospital. We are proud to announce that the pediatric care center has been named the "Gladys M. and Frederick Stewart Pediatric Care Center" in their honor.

Mrs. Stewart's generosity and kindness of spirit will live on in the many children who receive care at this center. The entire community of the Miami Children’s Health System, Inc / DBA as: Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation will be forever in her debt.
